Border Patrol agent accused of assaulting detainee

A federal grand jury indicted a Border Patrol agent Friday on civil rights charges stemming from the alleged assault of a detainee in Nogales, Ariz., nearly three years ago.

The indictment named agent Edward Moreno in connection with a May 2006 assault of detainee Alfredo Becerra Sanchez at a holding facility.

Moreno was charged with deprivation of rights under color of law and of making a false statement. The indictment said Becerra was injured.

Moreno was accused of falsely describing the incident in an official memorandum, saying that Becerra struck him at least twice behind his right ear and grabbed him as the two men fell to the floor.

Moreno will have an initial appearance and be arraigned March 26 before a federal magistrate.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
