The Pima Community College women’s basketball team picked a terrible time to have its worst shooting half of the year.
The Aztecs lost to the Schoolcraft (Livonia, Mich.) Ocelots 71-65 in overtime Friday in a semifinal game at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Tournament in East Peoria, Ill.
Pima (27-6) plays Parkland (Champaign, Ill.) in a third-place game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Schoolcraft and Kirkwood (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) meet in the finals following the third-place game.
Pima started cold, shooting 12 percent (4 of 31) in the first half. The Aztecs trailed 36-18 at the intermission.
Schoolcraft saw its shooting fall off in the second half, enabling Pima to come back.
Pima outscored the Ocelots 39-21 in the second half to tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation.
Schoolcraft regrouped in overtime, converting 3 of 5 field goals and 8 of 14 from the foul line.
Field goal shooting problems resurfaced for Pima, when the Aztecs went 3 of 8.
Pima freshman Tia Morrison led all scorers with 21 points. She also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Nene Villalobos (Sunnyside High) added 12 points.
UA women’s swimming
After two days, the defending national champion Arizona Wildcats are in third place at the NCAA Championship.
The final round is Saturday.
California is the leader with 302 points followed by Georgia with 295 1/2 and Arizona’s 282 1/2.
UA’s Julie Stupp placed fifth in the championship heat of the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:02.99 Friday. In the consolation final of the 400 individual medley, Jenny Forster placed second with a time of 4:06.10.
The duo of Ana Agy and Hailey DeGolia posted times of 51.96 and 52.61 respectively in the finals heat of the 100 butterfly and finished fifth and eighth.
Lara Jackson took second in the 100 fly consolation final with a time of 52.30. Jackson will swim in the 100 free and 400 free relay Saturday in what will be her last collegiate events.
Annie Chandler, who broke Amanda Beard’s school record (59.73, 2000) in the 100 breaststroke prelims with a time of 59.18, finished fourth in the finals with her 59.24.
Agy and DeGolia teamed again in the 100 backstroke, with Agy going 51.65 and placing third and DeGolia taking seventh with a time of 52.08.
UA women’s tennis
Danielle Steinberg and Natasha Marks registered straight-set singles shutouts Friday to lead Arizona to a 7-0 defeat of Wyoming in the weekend’s first test in a multi-team event at Honolulu.
Arizona (8-5) will meet host Hawaii on Saturday.
Steinberg teamed with Sarah Landsman in the No. 1 doubles slot Friday.
Other doubles wins were posted by Marks and Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh and Debora Castany. Others singles wins went to Landsman, Masschelein, Huh and Castany.
UA women’s golf
Freshman Nikki Koller carded a 1-over round of 73 to help No. 20-ranked Arizona into 12th place at the Betsy Rawls Invitational Friday in Austin, Texas.
In a tie for 15th place, Koller is three shots off the individual lead.
Koller continues her strong play during the spring portion of the season that has seen her average 72.8 through two events.
Brittany Beneveuto finished at 3-over 75 and Amanda Wilson had a 77. Both Isabelle Boineau and Emily Mason finished the first 18 holes by carding an 81.
