Arizona has only one more day to figure out the starting pitching of the No. 4 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils.
That may not be enough time.
The Wildcats seemed lost again at the plate for the second straight game with Josh Spence limiting them to just two hits through seven innings of a 7-3 loss to the Sun Devils in front of a sold out crowd at Packard Stadium on Saturday.
Arizona’s Steve Selsky managed one of the few blows with a solo homer in the sixth inning of Spence.
The Wildcats (11-9, 0-2) had a chance to break things open in the fourth inning with two runners on before striking out twice and grounding out against Spence.
The Sun Devils (16-3, 2-0) pitcher gave up a pair of runs in the eighth before leaving with 10 strikeouts and improving to 4-0 on the season.
It was the second straight masterful performance by the Sun Devils. Mike Leake pitched a complete game, 15-strikeout performance in a 4-1 victory on Friday.
Selsky added another hit in the second of the three game series, which concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Daniel Butler, Shaun Cooper and Bryce Ortega where the other Wildcats to get hits off the Sun Devils.
Arizona State took advantage of Arizona starter Matt Veltmann with a two-run double from Raoul Torrez and RBI singles from Kole Calhoun and Zack MacPhee.
Veltmann (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four hits and striking out four.
