Quarterback Foles on target in scrimmage

Nick Foles is getting settled at quarterback after sitting out last season.

That showed when the Arizona Wildcat completed 14 of 18 passes for 156 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to tight end Rob Gronkowski, during an 85-play scrimmage Saturday.

“I felt more comfortable,” Foles said. “Every time I get out there, I feel better. Offensively, we started out slow. The defense gave us trouble in the beginning. Then as the scrimmage went on we started to make plays and move the ball.”

The starting quarterback battle between Foles and 2008 backup Matt Scott has been the big story through spring drills leading up to the annual Spring Game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Arizona Stadium

Scott completed 15 of 23 passes for 137 yards in Saturday’s workout.

Bryson Beirne, another quarterback, connected on 2 of 3 throws for 17 yards. He was intercepted by Trevin Wade.

Terrell Turner was the receiver of choice for Foles and Scott, catching a total of seven passes for 103 yards.

William Wright and Delashaun Dean had five catches apiece.

Tailback Greg Nwoko led the backs with 29 yards on nine carries. Keola Antolin had 19 yards, including a 1-yard scoring run.

Defensive end Brooks Reed had two of the team’s six sacks, and Donald Horton and Apai Tuihalamaka recovered fumbles.

Kicker Alex Zendejas, attempting to replace Jason Bondzio, made field goals of 42 and 49 yards, but missed a 53-yarder and had an attempt blocked.

The move to safety for Robert Golden is paying off as the sophomore led the way with seven tackles. Fellow safety Cam Nelson added six tackles.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
