Conservationists oppose Kaibab forest logging plan

FLAGSTAFF — An environmental group is challenging a U.S. Forest Service logging plan for an area north of the Grand Canyon.

The Center for Biological Diversity says a plan approved by a Kaibab National Forest district ranger to thin trees on more than 26,000 acres allows too many big trees to be cut down. It says that would damage habitat needed by the endangered northern goshawk and remove too much of the forest canopy.

The logging was approved in February in an area between the North Rim and Jacob Lake. The site is next to 58,000 acres that burned in 2006.

The appeal of the district ranger’s logging decision asks the Kaibab National Forest supervisor to overturn the plan.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
