Brewer names ex-state official as head of DES

PHOENIX – Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday announced her appointment of a former Department of Economic Security administrator as the state social-service agency’s new director.

Neal Young was most recently assistant housing director for the city of Phoenix. When he worked for the state, he held a variety of DES administrative jobs between 1991 and 2001, including assistant director of the Division of Children, Youth and Families.

His appointment as DES director is the latest senior-level personnel move made by Brewer since she became governor on Jan. 20 when Democrat Janet Napolitano resigned to become U.S. Homeland Security secretary.

Former DES Director Linda Blessing has overseen the department on an interim basis since the departure of Napolitano’s last DES director, Tracy Wareing.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
