FBI says e-mail promising `Oprah’ tickets is fake

CHICAGO – The FBI and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” say Internet users should beware of an e-mail scam that promises attendance at the popular talk show in exchange for the purchase of a plane ticket.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center said this week that a circulating e-mail was advertising the “Oprah Millionaire Contest Show,” which asks recipients for contact information. It also says those who apply have a chance to win $1 million.

The bureau says the e-mail is fraudulent and not from Winfrey or her show’s production company, or Harpo Productions.

Harpo has posted a warning about the scam on the show’s Web site. It says authorities told them at least a dozen scams currently promise tickets, travel and money from the Chicago-based show.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
