Deputies ID toddler who drowned in family hot tub

Sheriff’s deputies have released the name of a toddler who drowned Sunday in a family hot tub.

She was Arianna Core, who would have been 2 years old next month, sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Dawn Barkman said Monday.

Arianna died in the backyard hot tub while family members napped after an Easter outing, Barkman said. Someone from the home found Arianna in the tub shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday and called authorities.

Arianna was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Barkman said.

It appears to be an accidental drowning, Barkman said, adding detectives were sent to the home, which is standard procedure in such cases.

The child drowned at her home on South Heifner Place, near South Kinney and West Bopp Roads, Barkman said.

Family members had gathered at the home after an outing and took afternoon naps, she said. Those in the home thought the child also was napping, but apparently Arianna woke up and wandered outside.

Her death brings this year’s metro-area drownings of children younger than 11 to two, plus one near drowning, Tucson fire Capt. Tricia Tracy said.

At this time last year, there had been a drowning and a near drowning, Tracy said.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.
