Calexico performs on CD
honoring Gaffney
Old Pueblo-based Calexico is among the musicians included in a CD tribute to the late Chris Gaffney, singer and founder of popular duo The Hacienda Brothers.
Calexico performs “Frank’s Tavern” on the new disc, “Man of Somebody’s Dreams: A Tribute to the Songs of Chris Gaffney.” Other artists on the CD include Joe Ely, Boz Scaggs, Los Lobos, Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Tom Russell, James McMurtry, Freddy Fender, The Iguanas, Alejandro Escovedo, John Doe, Robbie Fulks and Dave Gonzales, Gaffney’s Hacienda Brothers bandmate.
Gaffney, who attended junior high school here and performed often in Tucson clubs, died of liver cancer last year. He was 57.

Brad William Henke, our favorite former University of Arizona football player turned actor, has popped up on ABC’s “Lost.”
Henke has appeared as Bram in episodes that aired April 1, April 8 and April 15.
Eb’s Camp Cookin’ has CD
release party on April 26
Publicity materials liken Tucson acoustic band Eb’s Camp Cookin’ to “intoxicated hillbillies playing thoughtful Americana with an Arizona edge.”
Just don’t tell that to band leader Mark Robert “Eb” Eberlein.
“Intoxicated hillbillies, yes, we have been workin’ on that for a long while . . . but once you start labeling us Americana. . . well, that’s going a little too far!” Eberlein jokingly says in the release.
Eb’s Camp Cookin consists of Eberlein on guitar, dobro, harmonica and vocals; Phil Anderson on bass; and Tim O’Connor on fiddle and mandolin.
The band will celebrate the release of its latest CD, “Plain Green Wrapper,” with a party April 26 at Old Town Artisans, 201 N. Court Ave. Admission to the 5 p.m. show is $2 at the door or two cans of food for the Community Food Bank. A $6 buffet also will be available. book on spirituality
A local clergyman has written a book about – you guessed it – spirituality.
Randy Raaum, pastor of Pima Street Baptist Church, is the author of “The Big Picture: How Thinking About Heaven Can Give You Power for Living on Earth” (PublishAmerica).
According to a news release, the book “uses scripture and modern parables to illustrate how eternity thinking can help us soar through the most difficult times in life!”
Tucson author’s Rios’ latest
book now available
A story about kindness and friendship is at the heart of a new book by local author Braulia Rios.
In “Elijah the Turtle” (Dorrance Publishing Co), a woman finds the critter on a busy road, takes him home and names him. The two become friends but Elijah eventually realizes something is missing.
” ‘Elijah the Turtle’ reminds us of the things nature intends while sharing with us a unique friendship only nature could have created,” publicity materials state.
Rios, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is also the author of “Barbie the Bird” and “Hillary the Ladybug.”
