The vehicle used in the killing of a man at a car wash was destroyed by fire about two miles southwest of the shooting scene, a Pima County sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
The car, a black Audi, was found burning an hour after the 11:10 p.m. Monday shooting in the 7900 block of West Settler Road, near West Valencia Road and south Camino de Oeste, said Deputy Dawn Barkman. The car was reported stolen by its owner in Mesa about a day or two before the killing, Barkman said. It was found by a deputy sent to investigate a report of a car fire on West Settler Road, Barkman said.
She said detectives examined the car Wednesday afternoon and determined it had been the getaway car used in the killing of 20-year-old Francisco Antonio Calvillo at a car wash in the 2600 block of West Valencia Road.
Calvillo and a relative were shot by a man who had been a passenger in the Audi, authorities said. The cousin, who has not been named by deputies, is expected to survive. Calvillo died about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at a hospital, Barkman said.
Detective Capt. Christopher Nanos said both men were from Nogales, Ariz.
The sheriff’s department Wednesday released a surveillance tape of the fatal shooting.
It shows the Audi pulling into the car wash, a gunman gets out, walks to the area where Calvillo and his cousin are cleaning two cars, opens fire on the pair and flees in the Audi, which is driven by another person.
The suspect was wearing dark-colored shorts and hat along with a light-colored T-shirt, light-colored socks and athletic shoes during the attack.
Sheriff’s authorities released the tape in the hope it would prompt people to call in leads, Barkman said.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
Nanos said detectives have found nothing in either man’s background that could provide a motive for the shooting.
“We have to go with what the survivor tells us and that is that he did not know who it was that shot him,” Nanos said.
