It seems like we’ll be witnessing more lucrative franchises uniting into a “versus” movie more often than I expected. Last year, “Freddy Vs. Jason” put together two of the most recognizable horror slashers fighting each other on-screen. Now, we have “Alien vs. Predator” that puts together two vicious creatures from different franchises in the same screenplay, just throw some humans into the mix and you got yourself a movie.
The plot is pretty simple, Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) has found with one of his satellites a pyramid buried 2,000 feet below the ice in Antarctica. He recruits a team of scientists, researchers and explorers including Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan) and Sebastian de Rosa (Raoul Bova), and they all go down only to find two alien creatures fighting the ultimate battle.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson, has written a decent story that manages to put the two title creatures in the same frame. I was satisfied with the story, and I was hoping for a couple of aspects to be explored, but they weren’t. The special effects look very well done, and I really enjoyed the scenes with the Aliens and Predators killing each other. The characters and dialogue didn’t work as well as I expected.
It seems like they’re only there to say things that sound well in the movie trailer, like “we’re in the middle of a war” and “you’re an ugly son of a *.” The movie worked as popcorn entertainment, but I was hoping for a little bit more depth about the two creatures. Sadly, I didn’t get that. I have to say that I ended up enjoying it. Check it out, you might have a good time.
