4 charged in poisoning of young runaway

The Associated Press

Four people have been charged with negligent homicide in the Feb. 18 death by alcohol poisoning of a 13-year-old runaway Phoenix girl.

Brenda Nguyen died after drinking about a fifth of vodka in less than an hour. Clayton Koepke, 18; his friend, Armando Hernandez Jr., 18; Hernandez’s mother, Ana Laura Hernandez, 44; and her boyfriend, Scott Franze, 38, already faced child abuse charges.

According to a police probable-cause statement filed in court, Koepke wanted Nguyen to drink heavily so he could have sex with her. She fell unconscious and began having seizures. The four watched her for three hours, including performing CPR at times, records said. Then they went to bed. They found her dead in the morning.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
