The All Saints Catholic Newman Center has announced plans to construct a dorm tower on its site in downtown Tempe.
The tower near Arizona State University will cost up to $50 million.
It’s unclear just how tall the tower will rise on the site, which is less than an acre.
Planners for Tempe said the center’s officials have discussed a roughly 20-story structure.
On Sunday, the center’s leaders told parishioners they had decided to build a tower that will house about 500 students.
Developer Domus Communities of Kansas City will pay to build and maintain the tower.
The project will include offices and a chapel.
The church hopes the near-campus living will bring its ministry to more students.
Church officials did not return phone calls about the project, but the Web site www.preparehimroom.org has details about the project.
