TEMPE – The Flowing Wells’ girls soccer team notched two first-half goals and made it stand in cruising to a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over No. 14 Tempe McClintock at the Tempe Sports complex.

Flowing Wells will next face Cienega on Wednesday at Tucson High School in the semifinals of the Class 4A Division I state tournament.

“We played a good first half but kind of mediocre second half,” Flowing Wells coach Sean Ochoa said of Saturday’s win. “We knew they (Tempe McClintock) were playing good soccer, but I think our ability to keep possession of the ball was the big difference.”

In addition to Flowing Wells and Cienega, the 4A Kino Region has three teams in Wednesday’s final four of the 4A-I playoffs. Sabino, which won the Kino Region championship over Flowing Wells on Jan. 25, advanced with a 2-1 win over Catalina Foothills on Saturday.

Junior forward Skye Schultz had the two first-half goals for Flowing Wells, which improved to 16-4 overall.

Schultz was assisted on the first goal by her sister, freshman forward Jasmine Schultz, in the seventh minute. Skye Schultz’s second goal came in the 18th minute of the half when she was fed a pass by junior forward Kati Saxton.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Czelene Carrera knocked in an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half for a 3-0 lead.

For added insurance, Jasmine Schultz headed in the fourth goal after being fed by freshman Mayra Gonzalez.

Senior keeper Elizabeth Slaymaker stopped six McClintock shots.

No. 15 Cienega 1, No. 10 Sahuaro 0: Alexa Garzelloni had the game’s only goal, in the 30th minute at Tucson High.

The Bobcats improve to 14-9-2 and advance to play Flowing Wells in Wednesday’s semifinals at Tucson High at 7:30 p.m.
