Smuggler gets 7 years in death of migrant

The Associated Press
IN BRIEF

A Mexican man has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison in the vehicle rollover death of an illegal immigrant near Tucson.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Jesus Espinoza Martinez of Sinaloa was driving a van loaded with 31 illegal immigrants in April when U.S. Border Patrol agents began following them without using emergency lights.

Espinoza said in his plea agreement that when he saw the Border Patrol vehicle, he turned off his headlights and drove off Interstate 10 just south of Tucson.

Espinoza couldn’t see the road and drove off an embankment, rolling the van over several times before it stopped on its side, killing a woman and injuring 29 others.

Espinoza admitted to being the group’s smuggler.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
