No surprise: Janet’s tough

Citizen Staff Writer
Our Opinion

Homeland Security Secretary and former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is going after what she calls “criminal aliens.”

About 113,000 criminals who were in the U.S. illegally were deported last year, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

As many as 450,000 criminals – currently in federal, state and local detention centers – entered the U.S. illegally.

Improved communication would enable federal authorities to red-flag illegal-immigrant inmates in jails and prisons around the U.S. Once the criminal serves his sentence, immediate deportation would follow.

That Napolitano wants to send home criminal aliens should come as a surprise only to those who bought into far-right claims that she was “soft” on illegal immigration.

Make no mistake: The former federal prosecutor and Arizona attorney general is taking a tough, sensible approach to protecting our borders. And we applaud her latest proposal for making the U.S. safer.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
