The construction of Tucson’s first SuperTarget is well under way at North Oracle and Roger roads. Senior Project Superintendent Jim Bechtel, with Adolfson & Peterson Construction, said work began Jan. 6 and 75 percent of the old Target building has been razed. Twenty percent of the new parking lot west of Michaels is finished.
Target is slated to open in October, with the building done Aug. 28, Bechtel said.
There are 12 on-site companies from Phoenix and Tucson, with an average of about 80 workers there daily. Target, along with Adolfson & Peterson Construction, is emphasizing “green” construction.
“We are salvaging what we can of the materials as opposed to just hauling it to the landfill. We have saved all of the block and concrete and have been grinding it and milling it to fill the parking lot,” Bechtel said.
Tucson business Jade Concrete Inc. is adding the 180,000 square feet of concrete for the new Target. Work started Tuesday on the slab and will continue through April 28. Lino Silva, superintendent of Jade Concrete, said the company has 30 to 35 workers at the site.
“It’s been keeping the guys busy,” he said. “We haven’t had to have any layoffs or anything like that, so it’s good.”
