GLENDALE – It had been 22 years since a Canyon del Oro High School girls basketball team felt the joy of hoisting a state championship trophy.

Behind 18 points from junior Sydney Lewis, CDO beat Tempe McClintock 49-45 on Tuesday to capture the Class 4A Division I state championship, its first title game appearance since winning it all in 1987.

For the Santa Rita boys basketball team, a two-decade drought between state championship game appearances may seem like a welcome trade-off to the pain it felt Tuesday.

After trailing by 15 points with less than four minutes to go against Phoenix Greenway in the 4A Division II title game, a game-winning 3-pointer from star junior Terrell Stoglin was off the mark, and Santa Rita fell in the championship game for the third straight year, and the fourth time in five years.

Stoglin, who scored a game-high 28 points, guaranteed he will take his team back to the championship for his senior year in 2010.

“I’m going to win it next year, guaranteed,” he said.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
