Matt Veltmann’s strong pitching helped the University of Arizona baseball team win the rubber match of its three-game series with visiting Massachusetts on Sunday.

Veltmann (1-2) allowed four hits and struck out five in 5 1/2 innings for the Wildcats (8-5), who beat the Minutemen 9-0.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning before the UA offense scored three runs. The Wildcats added four in the sixth.

Dillon Baird had three hits for UA, while Bryce Ortega drove in three runs.

Three players were ejected from the game after a sixth-inning skirmish.

Baird appeared to get his legs tangled with UMass first baseman Peter Copa on a pickoff play. The two then exchanged shoves and the benches cleared.

UA hosts Oklahoma State for the start of a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

UA men’s swimming

The Wildcats finished third in the Pac-10 meet at Long Beach Calif., with 647 points. Stanford (918 1/2) was first, followed by California (866).

UA men’s tennis

Arizona won its ninth straight match with a 6-1 win over UC Irvine on Saturday.

No. 23-ranked UA (11-1) will host Memphis at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Pima softball

The No. 23-ranked Aztecs (29-5) won a pair of mercy-rule games Sunday, beating visiting Mott (Flint, Mich.) CC 12-4 and 10-2.

Iliana Teran (Sunnyside) won both games to improve to 7-1.

Logan Hall (Sahuaro) ended the first game with a home run while Molly Brossart (Sabino) ended the second contest with a grand slam.

Pima hosts No. 1 Phoenix College for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Pima baseball

The Aztecs fell to 12-10 with a 11-6 loss to visiting Ryutsu Keizai (Ibaraki, Japan) on Sunday.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
