UA softball team rallies twice, sweeps N.M. State

The No. 12-ranked Arizona softball team rallied in both games to sweep a doubleheader from New Mexico State on Wednesday in Las Cruces, N.M.

In the first game, Arizona trailed 5-4 in the seventh inning when Kristen Arriola hit a one-out double and Jenae Leles belted a two-run homer – her second of the game – to help UA win 8-5. Lini Koria added a two-run homer after Stacie Chambers had singled.

In the second game, UA won 10-5 after trailing 4-3 in the sixth inning. Chambers hit her 20th homer, a two-run shot, and UA pulled away for the win.

Jennifer Martinez (5-1) got the win in both games, striking out five in relief in the first game and five in the second game.

Arizona opens Pac-10 conference play against Oregon State on March 27 at Hillenbrand Stadium. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

Pima softball wins two

The Pima Community College softball team improved to 41-7 with a two nonconference wins over St. Louis CC at Merrimac. The host Aztecs took the first game 10-2 and the nightcap 8-0.

In Game 1, Sabino High School grad Chelsea Evanoff (16-2) picked up the win. In Game 2, Sierra Vista Buena grad Jordan Trujillo (15-3) pitched a one-hit shutout.

Kaity Ingram (Catalina Foothills) went 4 for 4 in the first game, while Logan Hall (Sahuaro) had two RBIs.

Alex Marshall (Salpointe Catholic) and Domonique Marquez (Sunnyside) each went 2 for 3 in the second game.

Pima will host Arizona Western in a noon doubleheader Tuesday at the West Campus.

Pima baseball wins in 9th

Pima’s baseball team beat Madison Area Technical College 6-5, thanks to some late heroics.

Flowing Wells grad Dave Zavala hit a winning two-out single up the middle to score pinch-hitter Kody Johnson (Cienega), who had singled to start the ninth inning. Jesus Vega (Amphi) sacrificed Johnson to second, and Johnson went to third on an intentional walk.

Both Zavala and Daniel Rodriguez (Desert View) had three hits and two RBIs. Andrew White (Elfrida Valley Union) picked up the win in relief.

Pima will host Williston State at 2 p.m. Thursday at the West Campus.
