Arizona’s Jean Basson broke Chad Carvin’s 500-yard freestyle school record time as the defending NCAA champion Wildcats took sixth place on the first day of the men’s event in College Station, Texas.

Basson, of South Africa, had a clocking of 4 minutes, 11.59 seconds for the mark. Carvin set the previous standard in 1995.

The UA men’s 200 free relay team of Jordan Smith, Nicolas Nilo, Adam Small and Joel Greenshields placed sixth in the finals at 1:16.68.

In the prelims, they set a school mark of 1:16.22.

Arizona’s Jack Brown finished second in the 200 medley finals at 1:43.67
