Each week, Marana High School senior track and field star Kane Punt draws closer to the goals he set for his final season.
“He’s having a pretty good year,” said Marana assistant coach Matt Romanowski. “He generally finishes first or second in most of the events. He’s running in the low 15s in the high hurdles and is knocking on the door at 6 feet in the high jump. He’s having a pretty good year.”
Romanowski said he doesn’t know what would prevent Punt from competing for a Class 4A Sonoran Region title.
“I haven’t seen a lot of times in our region in the 110 (meter hurdles) faster than his,” Romanowski said. “He’s up there in the 110 and high jump. He can probably place in a couple of other events.”
Punt won the 110 hurdles Wednesday in a four-team meet at Desert View in 15.58 seconds.
He later won the high jump, clearing 5-10. He was fourth in the triple jump (36-0).
Punt’s winning high jump height tied his personal best.
“He was pretty happy with that,” Romanowski said. “His jump at 5-10 was a great jump. I thought he was going to go way beyond that.”
Punt’s wins helped Marana beat host Desert View 86-71, Douglas (67) and Cienega (32).
Marana’s girls team scored 90 to win its meet over Desert View (54), Douglas (54) and Cienega (50).
