Sophomore stops Lobos in debut start

Joe Allison was on his game in his first collegiate start Tuesday.

The University of Arizona pitcher allowed only three runs in six innings in his starting debut as the Wildcats beat New Mexico 9-3 at Sancet Stadium.

Allison, a sophomore, allowed six hits and didn’t walk anyone against the potent Lobos (28-9).

Jason Stoffel gave up one hit in 1 1/2 innings to earn his seventh save of the season.

UA scored runs in each of the first four innings to take a 5-1 lead. The Wildcats later broke the game open with three runs in the eighth to conclude the scoring.

UA’s Shaun Cooper went 3 for 3 and hit his second homer of the year, while Kyle Stiner was 3 for 3 with two runs.

Brad Glenn and Bobby Coyle each drove in two runs for the Wildcats (15-16).

Starter Bobby Moore (4-2) took the loss for New Mexico, giving up three runs in 1 1/2 innings.

The teams conclude the two-game nonconference series with a 3 p.m. game Wednesday.
