University of Arizona junior gymnast Sarah Tomczyk scored a 9.775 in the floor exercise at the NCAA National Championships on Thursday but failed to advance to the finals.

Tomczyk was the only Wildcat to compete in the meet in Lincoln, Neb., which continues through the weekend.

She tied for 26th in the qualifying.

“She did a great job,” Arizona coach Bill Ryden said in a press release. “She had a few wobbles that you just can’t have at this meet, but her routine was one of the best in the country.

“Sarah had a great set and carried herself well,” Ryden said.

“She represented our team and the university well and we’re proud of her.”

The Naperville, Ill., native earned a spot in the national meet by winning the South Central Regional floor event with a 9.9 score April 4 in Fayetteville, Ark.

This was the junior’s first taste of the national meet. On the season, Tomczyk posted a career-high on floor with a 9.925. She was also named to the All-Pac 10 first team in the event.

Our Digital Archive

This blog page archives the entire digital archive of the Tucson Citizen from 1993 to 2009. It was gleaned from a database that was not intended to be displayed as a public web archive. Therefore, some of the text in some stories displays a little oddly. Also, this database did not contain any links to photos, so though the archive contains numerous captions for photos, there are no links to any of those photos.

There are more than 230,000 articles in this archive.

In TucsonCitizen.com Morgue, Part 1, we have preserved the Tucson Citizen newspaper's web archive from 2006 to 2009. To view those stories (all of which are duplicated here) go to Morgue Part 1
