A Sonoran hot dog on a poppy seed bun with refried beans and jalapeño relish? Really? Is that how we do it here in the Old Pueblo? Well Linda and Mark Nunez will tell you, yes indeed that is how at Super Gyros and More. What is a Gyro shop doing selling Sonoran Hotdogs? Well that is why Tucson Biz Beat is saluting this unique eatery.
Super Gyros and More has an interesting menu. They specialize in hotdogs, Gyros and delicious sandwiches, but feature mouth-watering things like, chicken chicken quesadilla, tortilla soup and 13 layer lasagna of certain nights of the week. It is just not your average Gyro shop, says the former cook at Chads Steak house and McMahon’s who is now owner of his own eatery. For Mark and his wife Linda, this is a “dream come true” for them.
Under the new ownership, this husband and wife team has put together a basic menu with lots of twists and turns. For example, the Sonoran hot dog on a poppy seed bun with refried beans and jalapeño relish. It is an interesting twist on one of Tucson’s favorite foods. Yes, the dog is still wrapped in bacon, and there are the traditional toppings, but rather than whole beans, refried beans and Linda’s grandmother jalapeño relish. I am not a poppy seed bun person, but once I got past the poppy seed bun, I enjoyed the different taste this dog offered.
The same is true with their Chicago Dog. They use red hot links rather than traditional beef dog and it makes all the difference in the world with flavor. It bursts in your mouth, but doesn’t burn like some red hots. Of course, their sandwich of the month had to be my favorite. Philli Cheese Steak made from rib-eye beef, sauteed onions, Cheese Wiz, all on a locally baked roll from La Baguette. Warning, this sandwich should be split as it is huge and delicious especially if you add the Buffalo Ranch Fries or the Super Gyro Fries. You will need to be dragged out.
What makes Super Gyros and More stand out is that they have specials such as family dining night where they feature twice a week a family styled meal on Wednesdays and Fridays. They swear by their 13-layer lasagna. They also feature their famous Tortilla Soup filled with chicken, a hint of black beans, bell peppers and lots of yummy toppings like avocados, shredded cheese, tortilla strips, lime wedge, paired with a couple of slices of quesadilla get this, all for $4.50.
They also have their challenge, eat 4 one- foot long hotdogs with toppings, 1 large super gyro chip, 1 large super gyro fries and a large drink in under 30 minutes and you get a T shirt and your picture in the hall of fame.
So if you are looking for a sandwich, a delicious gyro, and hotdogs with a twist, and a few odds and ends that make your mouth water, then you want to visit Super Gyros and More at 8585 E Broadway. Tucson Biz beat salutes this new eatery with new management and says, “Can I have a hotdog for the road?”
