Nutro dog food – more than 1,000 complaintsby Karyn Zoldan on Jan. 29, 2013, under Animal News, Pet Health & Safety
Update: Nutro asked me to post their response so scroll down to the bottom of this blog post.
While I cannot find any current recalls for Nutro Pet Food, this Consumer Affairs page has more than 1,000 complaints for Nutro dog food. Many of the issues are serious to life threatening. Here are but a few excerpts:
” Our dog started throwing up right after we bought a new bag of Nutro Max for large breedOur dog started throwing up right after we bought a new bag of Nutro Max for large breed.”
“Then, I picked up a new bag about 2 weeks ago and shortly thereafter (this last Sunday), he started vomiting bile. ”
“Then about a week into their eating it, they both became very sick. My senior dog, Scout, vomited after every dinner. ”
“My Jack Russell is sick and my German Shepherd urinating blood Shame, shame, shame on them! We were loyal Nutro feeders for years! After the last 2 months, our 2 dogs have gotten so sick with their recipe change.”
“Please, please file a complaint with the FDA. We all have something in common here and this company needs to be investigated immediately. Our extremely healthy and happy coonhound got so sick and the only change in her diet was a fresh bag of Nutro wholesome essentials purchased on 1/15/13. She is not getting any better.”
In the past, dog food and cat food has been slow to be formally recalled. I know if my dogs were eating this food, I would be in pause mode right about now researching the Web. Is Nutro made in the USA? Are the products sourced in the USA? Buyers beware…
Update: From Nutro
My name is Monica Barrett, and I’m the corporate affairs manager for The Nutro Company. We found your recent article regarding the complaints on consumeraffiars.com, and I wanted to take the time to address your concerns and answer some of your questions.
At The Nutro Company, the safety and well-being of the pets we feed is our top priority. That’s why we encourage each pet owner to contact us directly with their concerns and why it’s important for us to reach out to you now.
Please know that we take consumer complaints seriously. That’s why we feel it’s important for you and your readers to know that the vast majority of the consumer complaints found on consumeraffairs.com are from 2009 when the site wrongly accused The Nutro Company of being under investigation by the FDA. To put this into perspective, only 12 percent of the total complaints are from 2011 and 2012. We routinely cross-reference our own data to determine if the reviewers on consumeraffairs.com have contacted us directly, and we’re disheartened to learn that most of them have not contacted us.
You are correct when you report there are no recalls related to Nutro products. This is important since we are committed to the quality, safety and performance of all our pet food brands. Our products are made with some of the highest quality standards in the industry as we perform more than 600 quality checks each day. As we have for more than 80 years, we strive to deliver the finest natural products to our customers and their pets; therefore, we are confident in the safety and quality of our products.
Pet owners can rest assured that The Nutro Company manufactures all of its products in the United States and is committed to sourcing as many of our ingredients as possible from suppliers located near our manufacturing facilities. To ensure we receive high-quality and safe ingredients, all of our suppliers must comply with our strict and thorough Supplier Quality Assurance program and undergo frequent quality audits.
I hope I’ve been able to clear up any confusion caused by the complaints on consumeraffairs.com and answer your questions. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any additional questions.
