59 dead in the desert in July due to killer coyotesby Hugh Holub on Aug. 03, 2010, under border issues, politics, SB 1070
The Arizona Daily Star reported today that 59 bodies of illegal immigrants have been turned over to the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office in July.
That made July 2010 the second-deadliest month on record for illegal immigrants crossing in Southern Arizona. The record was 69 deaths recorded by Pima County in July 2005.
The bodies of illegal aliens who die in the countryside come from Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties.
All 59 dead immigrants did not expire during July. Some remains are of people who could have died months aroreven years ago.
And many of the people who did die in the desert this July may not be found for months or years.
According to many sources familiar with the death of illegal aliens attempting to cross the border, the number one reason for the casualty rate is that the immigrants have no idea what they are walking into and are unprepared for days of trekking through rugged territory in scorching heat.
I have personally encountered illegal immigrants who through Interstate 8 was just an hour or two walk ahead…this south of Ruby Road near the border west of Nogales. I have encountered illegal immgrants dressed in street clothes and shoes completely unsuitable for a hike through the mountains and desert, carrying a tiny little water bottle.
Ruthless coyotes mislead immigrants about how far the migrants have to walk to reach a pickup point, and abandon their “pollos” to die.
One has to wonder how many deaths can be attributed to the killer coyotes who smuggle people across the border and lie to them about what is ahead?
One has to wonder why there is not a coordinated effort on both sides of the border to hunt down the killer coyotes and bring them to justice?
Committing the misdemeanor of illegal entry should not be a death sentence.
