Latino Voters Not Buying “Border-First” Sound Bite

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

From AmericasVoice.org:

On Immigration in GOP Debate: Latino Voters Not Buying “Border-First” Sound Bite

Candidates Must Answer Key Question: As President, What Would You Do About the 11 Million Undocumented Immigrants in U.S. Today?

Washington, DC – Last night’s Republican presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library featured an important discussion prompted by Noticiero Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart.   The dominant line from GOP 2012 candidates on immigration these days is: we need to get tough on immigrants in a number of ways, and put off any discussion about legalization or visa reforms until the border is “finally” secure.  Last night, Díaz-Balart challenged some of the candidates to move beyond their vacuous “border security first” talking point, and get concrete about what conditions would prompt them to declare the border “secure,” and what they would do about the 11 million undocumented immigrants in our country at that point.  Needless to say, there was a lot of fumbling and not a lot of straight answers from most of the candidates.

Their answers also confirmed what we have been saying for some time – that the current GOP field has strayed far from President Reagan’s centrist, problem-solving approach when it comes to the issue of immigration, and this simple fact will have serious consequences for GOP outreach to Latino voters in the general election.  Spanish-language media coverage of last night’s debate and recent polling both raise some uncomfortable truths for the Republican field: 1) Latino voters see the “border first” plan for what it is—a political sound bite and excuse for more enforcement only, not a comprehensive solution; and 2) Latino voters really do want to know what the candidates’ plans are to deal with undocumented immigrants.  Instead of talking straight, most of the Republicans seem intent on walking a rhetorical tightrope to present a more friendly image to Latino voters, while not changing their actual policy positions to avoid inciting right-wing primary voters.

Indicative of this is the Spanish language coverage of last night’s debate.  In La Opinion, the largest Spanish language daily newspaper in the country, the lead article was unequivocal in criticizing the non-answers of the GOP field on immigration. Entitled “None of the Republican Candidates Want to Talk About the Legalization of the 11 Million Undocumented in the Country,” Antonieta Cadiz’s article noted that yesterday’s debate made something crystal clear (translated), “none of the Republican candidates want to talk about the possibility of legalizing the 11 million undocumented (immigrants) currently in the country…The candidates instead ‘shielded’ themselves with the ‘secure the border first’ argument.”

June 2011 polling from Latino Decisions and impreMedia shows why this is such a problem for the GOP.  When asked, “When you hear Republicans say that immigration reform must wait until the border is secure, do you think that is a legitimate concern that needs to be addressed, OR they are using that as an excuse to block action on immigration reform?” by a 55% – 30% margin, Latino voters said GOP candidates are “Using it to block action” on immigration reform instead of representing a “Legitimate concern.”  These voters know that border security is already in place.  But what hasn’t been tackled is the rest of reform, including the status of 11 million immigrants in the country without papers.  The same poll also found that by a 65% – 19% margin, Latino voters trust President Obama and Democrats more “to make the right decisions when it comes to immigration policy” compared with Republicans.

Notably, the two Republican contenders leading in the polls, Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) and Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), escaped Díaz-Balart’s follow-up questioning regarding what specifically they would do with the undocumented population in the nation, provided the border was secured to their satisfaction.  Both Gov. Perry and Gov. Romney waxed poetic about border security but ducked the elephant in the room – the 11 million undocumented immigrants whose status will not be resolved by building a fence of any size.  Romney went even further – no doubt to tweak Perry who has supported in-state tuition for undocumented kids who grew up in Texas – by suggesting that allowing talented young people who grew up in America and have no papers through no fault of their own is a magnet for illegal immigration.  Puh-leeze.

Interestingly, the only candidate to answer the question directly was Newt Gingrich, who followed up nods to border security and assimilation with this statement: “And then find a way to deal with folks who are already here, some of whom, frankly, have been here 25 years, are married with kids, live in our local neighborhood, go to our church. It’s got to be done in a much more humane way than thinking that to automatically deport millions of people.”

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “The leading candidates for the GOP nomination may have been standing on Ronald Reagan’s stage but they did not stand in his shoes.  Reagan supported legalization, immigration and a welcoming America.  The top-tier 2012 GOP candidates do not.  It’s pure fantasy to think the Party can appeal to Latino voters simply by changing their tone on immigration, and not actually changing their positions.”  And it’s hard to imagine how they reach the threshold of 40% of the Latino vote they need to re-take the White House with that approach.”

Lots of dope seized near Sonoita port of entry (Altar Valley–Sasabe)

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Press Release from US Customs and Border Protection September 6, 2011:

Significant Week Sonoita Border Patrol Station Seizes

More Than 3,000 Pounds of Marijuana

TUCSON, Ariz.Sonoita Station Border Patrol agents seized approximately 3,250 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $1,625,500 in five separate incidents since Sunday.

A Border Patrol canine team was tracking footprints of a group of possible illegal aliens Sunday when the service canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. An immediate search of the area revealed six bundles of marijuana abandoned on the trail. The bundles had a combined weight of just less than 279 pounds and valued at $139,000.

In another incident Sunday, agents responded to a detection sensor and found five bundles of abandoned marijuana weighing more than 218 pounds. The bundles were estimated to be worth approximately $109,000.

Agents stopped two vehicles Tuesday traveling in tandem and with false vehicle license plates. The female driver of the first vehicle, a U.S.citizen, was detained when agents discovered a false compartment in the vehicle containing 53 packages of marijuana weighing more than 312 pounds and valued at $156,000. Concurrently, agents stopped the second vehicle and apprehended two male passengers who admitted to working with the female driver of the first vehicle. The three subjects are being criminally prosecuted.

Wednesday afternoon, an agent encountered an abandoned pickup truck with 75 bundles of marijuana weighing 1,840 pounds and valued at $920,000.

In another incident Wednesday, Sonoita agents stopped a suspicious vehicle with modifications indicative of narcotics smuggling. Agents interviewed the driver, a Mexican citizen with a Permanent Resident Card, who gave agents permission to search his vehicle. After a Border Patrol canine team alerted to the presence of narcotics, agents discovered 60 packages of marijuana in a concealed compartment. The packages had a combined weight of almost 282 pounds and with a value of $140,500. The driver is being held for prosecution.

In each incident, agents transported the marijuana and vehicles to the Sonoita Station for processing.

According to Michael Hyatt, Patrol Agent in Charge of the Sonoita Station, the Tucson Sector deploys a combination of technology, infrastructure, and agents to effectively patrol the border, deter smuggling activity and interdict smugglers.  Specialty units, such as canine teams,” he said, “continue to assist agents in the field while old-fashioned tracking skills continue to be a valuable component in the Border Patrol’s arsenal of tools and techniques. The men and women of the Sonoita Border Patrol Station are taking our enforcement efforts to the next level.”

Since launching the Southwest Border Initiative in March 2009, the Department of Homeland Security has made significant investments toward establishing a secure and safe border environment to improve the quality of life throughoutArizonacommunities.

Customs and Border Protection welcomes assistance from the community.  To report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. All calls will be answered and remain anonymous.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between official ports of entry. Illegal workers got $4.2 billion in tax credits

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

The Washington Post reported that undocumented workers got $4.2 billion in tax credits last year.

Undocumented workers got billions from IRS in tax credits, audit finds

The Internal Revenue Service allowed undocumented workers to collect $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits last year, a new audit says, almost quadruple the sum five years ago.

Although undocumented workers are not eligible for federal benefits, the report released Thursday by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration concludes that federal law is ambiguous on whether these workers qualify for a tax break based on earned income called the additional child tax credit.

Here’s FoxNews on the story:

Illegal Workers Used Tax Credit to Pocket $4.2 Billion, Audit Shows

Talk about a tax loophole.

Undocumented workers collected $4.2 billion in a certain tax credit last year, up from less than $1 billion five years ago, according to a new audit.

The report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration looked only at a tax benefit known as the Additional Child Tax Credit, a refundable credit meant for working families. The audit found that as a result of vague U.S. law — as well as an expansion of the tax credit in stimulus legislation and other measures — the number of illegal workers collecting the money has skyrocketed.

COMMENTARY: So the illegal alien gets a tax id number because he does not have a Social Security number, files a tax return, and gets the child credit paid.

Someohow I cannot believe for a second this is some kind of accident…illegal aliens are gettng some pretty sophisticated help in getting taxpayer id numbers and gaming the system for the tax credit.

It is a crime in this country to aid and abet illegal entry…thus if you pick up an llegal alien and give him a ride you can go to jail.

How about the crime of aiding and abetting tax fraud and illegal residency?

Center for Biological Diversity opposes effort to improve border security

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

This Press Release from, Center for Biological Dioversity dated September 2, 2011 makes it absolutely clear where CBD’s priorities are…

Border Patrol Plan to Triple Base Size on Arizona-Mexico Border Puts Endangered Wildlife, Fragile Lands at Risk

TUCSON, Ariz.— The Center for Biological Diversity today criticized a new environmental analysis by the Department of Homeland Security that fails to adequately assess the effects of its border-security and enforcement activities along the U.S.-Mexico border, including tripling the size of its base in the desert. In comments submitted to the Department, the group called on Homeland Security to produce a thorough, realistic analysis of the impacts of its activities on the fragile and diverse landscapes of the border region, home to a range of threatened and endangered species.

“In its slipshod analysis of the impacts of tripling the size of its forward operating base near Organ Pipe National Monument and Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, Homeland Security seems to condone ongoing damage to these precious public lands and their wildlife,” said the Center’s Cyndi Tuell. “For imperiled species like Sonoran pronghorns, this lip-service study is a death knell.”

Organ Pipe and Cabeza Prieta lie adjacent to each other along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona and have been significantly hurt by off-road vehicle use in recent years — much of the damage has been the result of Border Patrol vehicles riding roughshod over wilderness areas.

“For an agency devoted to securing the border, the Border Patrol does an awful lot of off-road driving 15 to 20 miles north of the border, through extremely sensitive habitat for a range of species,” said Tuell. “Sonoran pronghorn are especially vulnerable to this kind of disruption, which can stop them from raising their fawns or getting enough to eat.”

Surveys and satellite data show that nearly 8,000 miles — and some estimate up to 20,000 miles — of illegal, “wildcat” roads now exist on the Cabeza Prieta, some of which were created by illegal cross-border vehicle activity, but an increasing percentage of which have resulted from misguided enforcement strategies.

“A memo of understanding between Homeland Security and the Department of the Interior was signed to create protocols for border-security activities on our precious public lands,” said Tuell. “In many places it works well, but on Organ Pipe and Cabeza Prieta, Homeland Security routinely ignores it.”

“The Department of Homeland Security should focus its enforcement efforts closer to the border to prevent damage to America’s public lands before it encroaches so far into the United States,” said Tuell. “And it needs to work more closely with land managers on the ground in these areas to reduce the damage caused by their activities.”

COMMENTARY: The border will never be secure against illegal entry and drug smuggling as long as portions of the border are widen open.

The reason these areas are wide open is because of federal land managers who put protecting lizards ahead of national security, and radical environmental groups like CBD who fight everything in the name of protecting endangered species.

I think it is time the federal government looks into where CBD gets its donations.

If I were in charge of the Mexican drug cartel I’d be giving money to outfits like CBD which fight securing the border. Groups like CBD consciously or unconsciously are aiding and abetting the Mexican drug cartels.

The people of America have got to stop this nonsense of debating border security versus proptecting the environment along the border. The drug smugglers and illegal aliens do not care about our environment and are destroying it. This must be stopped.

Environmental laws must be subordinated to national security in the area adjacent to our land borders so the Border Patrol can secure the border at the border.

Did you know it is a misdeamnor to illegally enter the country, but a felony to run over an endangered species lizard?

And those who want immigration law reform…it ought to be clear that is not going to happen until the border is secured.

Do not buy Janet Napoltiano’s claim the border is secured. We can show you exactly where it is not secure…the zone where illegal aliens killed Border Patrol agent Brian Terry west of Nogales. There is a wilderness area and national forest land along this stretch of the border that has virtually no Border Patrol access due toi environmental priorities.

Until the Border Patrol can gain access to the border, finish the fence, put in more roads, and saturate the border zone with agents, the border is not secure…and thus no immigration law reform.

Immigration reform advocates…your cause is being destroyed by groups like the Center for Biological Diversity.

MICHOACAN

Narco banners from the Knights Templar continue to appear around the state, offering rewards for certain Zeta members. This time the banners have photos, and a phone number to call.

MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN

Governor Rodrigo Medina, security spokesperson Jorge Domene Zambrano, and Attorney Adrian de la Garza held a press conference on Monday morning where the identities of the 5 men caught for the casino attack were reported. It included a video showing the men buying gasoline, and their vehicles at the casino. All of them have confessed and also said they are Zetas. The investigation continues.

CHIHUAHUA

The week is starting with narco banners placed in different locales in the cities of Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua (there’s a city and state with same name. The banners are not signed, and point to President Calderon as protecting Joaquin Guzman Loera, known as El Chapo Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. It also accuses El Chapo for the shooting at the Torreon stadium and the attack on the Monterrey casino.

CAMARGO, TAMAULIPAS

Federal Police reported that officers conducted a raid on Saturday and captured Abel Gonzalez Briones, aka The R-2, financial manager of the Gulf Cartel. Six other cartel members were also caught, including Bryan Aguilar Jorge Hinojosa, aka The R-24, who is chief coordinator for transfer of the drugs to the United States. SANTA CRUZ LOS PATOS, STATE OF MEXICO

In the weekend’s M3, there was a report of a narco grave found which had 5 bodies, and a note that the authorities said there could be up to 23 more. Blog Del Narco (http://www.blogdelnarco.com/)

**Asterisk denotes death involving a police officer or a member of the military serving in that capacity.

MONTERREY, NUEVO LEÓN

Some photos from Mexican sources of the casino aftermath. Gives a good idea of the fire intensity. Two bystanders recorded video showing state and municipal police taking no action; one of them claiming he heard the attackers shouting ‘we are Zetas’ and firing their rifles. This person claims the police were hiding in the parking area. (Note: Being out manned and out gunned, the officers made the best choice to be alive in order to help victims in the casino rather than end up dead and help no one.  ONLY those officers know exactly what the conditions were that they faced.  Life saving always takes priority over enforcement action. )

ZIRAHUEN, MICHOACÁN

Three Knights Templar gunmen were shot by the Mexican Army on Wednesday, two of them fatally. Seized were rifles, pistols, magazines, cartridges, narco banners, handcuffs, ammo carriers, and other things.

ACAPULCO, GUERRERO

On Wednesday there were two more executions in Acapulco of two underage boys, aged about 13 and 15. The youngest was shot at least nine times in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses.

XICOTENCATL, TAMAULIPAS

The state attorney general’s office confirmed that two government officials, one a controller and the other an auditor, that were kidnapped on Wednesday were found dead on Friday. Still missing is Alberto Olivo, collaborator of special audit of the federalized expenditures.

MEXICO CITY, DISTRITO FEDERAL

Gunmen dumped the remains of a beheaded man on the street near a major round about and TV station. A card was left signed by La Mano con Ojos.

CADAREYTA, NUEVO LEÓN

The Mexican army received a report of armed men and began searching for the vehicles. When the gunmen realized the spotted, they opened fire. Three of the bad guys were killed and the reminder escaped. The description of one could match that of El Loko, who was considered the leader of the Zetas in Allende and Cadereyta, and identified by the state Attorney General as responsible for the execution of two youths, found dismembered the past August 2.

CIUDAD VICTORIA, TAMAULIPAS

A couple days ago, five bodies were dumped in front of a business. Some were beheaded, some butchered into parts. Next to the bodies was a narco message from Los Zetas, saying the dead were with the Gulf Cartel.
