Communicated this weekend with Francisco Garza, a UA graduate, who is a coach at San Diego Hoover High School — the school that features top-flight Class of 2011 forward Angelo Chol — and he mentioned that Arizona has opened its recruiting for Chol.

“Yes, Coach (Sean) Miller and Book (Richardson) were both at our games, got a chance to meet both to start a relationship with Hoover and San Diego,” Garza said through an e-mail message. “(I) won’t be surprised if the coaches visit San Diego and Hoover in the future.”

Chol and Hoover High competed this weekend in the Bishop Gorman Classic in Las Vegas. Miller and Richardson were on hand to watch Chol and other prospects, including Bishop Gorman’s Shabazz Muhammad, a Class of 2012 point guard who just might be the best of his class.

Chol, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds, is a rebounding monster, averaging 12.3 a game. He also scores 17.1 a game, most of them through put-backs.

The Cats already have a commitment from Class of 2011 power forward Sidiki Johnson of Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep, but Miller and Richardson have realized that Chol is too good of a talent to pass on. Practically every Pac-10 program is recruiting him in addition to UConn, North Carolina and Kansas, among others.

Garza, who served in the Navy and graduated in 2004 from the UA, also runs the “Game Theory of Basketball” program in San Diego. It’s an elite-level training program which concentrates on physical training and basketball skill development.

Garza’s association with the UA could help in the recruitment of Chol in the future, although he just became familiar with Miller and Richardson this weekend.

The absolute cruelest fate is having the best PG in America or anywhere living in Tucson and seeing him go clear across the country to play at Maryland.  What’s up with the basketball gods?  Little help up there fellers!

Oh well.  It’s good once again to see the UA up against UNC, Kansas and UConn for a bonafide baller, but this time it’s for the services of a HSer from Cali, who’s coach is a UA alum.  Hmmm…And so you’d think the odds are in the Cardinal and Navy’s favor, right?  Now if we could only ward off the rest of the PAC-10…And if finding a place for Harden’s coach on Herbert’s staff got him called a genius (…that ‘ol rascally Son of Naismith, him…), what would placing Garza on the UA bench a seat or two from Miller be termed?  It’s worth a try.

Is that your professional opinion?  You are way off when you call Stoglin the best point guard in America.  He is not even the best in-state.

If  you are refeing to Stoglin, he’s nowhere near an elite level PG. We need instant impact from a 2010 PG, and Stoglin is a project at best for Arizona, that is to say, a carear bench player compared to the type of talent AZ should be landing at PG.
