The Arizona Wildcats softball team, ranked No. 1 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, won its season-opener Thursday night behind the stellar pitching of sophomore Kenzie Fowler.
Fowler pitched a three-hitter as Arizona defeated Indiana 4-0 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe. Fowler struck out 12 and walked one.
The Wildcats scored a run in the first inning on a one-out double by senior catcher Stacie Chambers, driving in senior outfielder Lauren Schutzler. Schutzler had walked and advanced to second when Brigette Del Ponte was hit by a pitch.
UA added a run in the sixth when pinch-runner Chelsea Suitos went from second to third base on a wild pitch, later scoring on a passed ball.
The Wildcats scored twice more in the seventh on a ground out and an error.
Arizona will play twice Friday at the Tempe Sports Complex. The Cats take on future Pac-12 foe Utah at 4:30 p.m. and then Nebraska at 7 p.m.
