Anthony Wayne Smith, who spent one season with the Arizona Wildcats in 1989 before being a first-round pick of the NFL’s Raiders, was charged with murder on Friday.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office charged Smith and two alleged associates with the beating and shooting death of a man in Lancaster, Calif., more than two years ago.

More details are available at the Los Angeles Times.

Smith spent the 1989 season with Arizona after his transfer from Alabama, earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors. He was the 11th overall pick in the 1990 draft by the Los Angeles Raiders. His Arizona teammate, linebacker Chris Singleton, was the eighth pick of that draft.

Smith, 43, played with the Raiders until 1998. He is one of 10 first-round picks to have played with Arizona.
