Former Arizona starting point guard MoMo Jones has decided to transfer to Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y., according to a report from Zagsblog.com.

When Jones left the Arizona, he expressed a desire to be closer to his Harlem home and his ailing grandmother. It is not yet known if Jones can get a transfer waiver from the NCAA that would allow him to play right away and not sit out a season.

Jones’ initial recruiting target appeared to be St. John’s, but an NCAA rule came into play there. One of his former high school coaches, Moe Hicks, is now the director of basketball operations with the Red Storm, and the school can not recruit any of his former players until June 1, 2012.

Iona, of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, went 25-12 last season and lost to Santa Clara in the final of the CollegeInsider.com tournament.

Jones averaged 9.7 points per game for Arizona last season, helping lead the Cats to the Elite Eight.
