Ben Dixon, a defensive lineman from St. Bonaventure High in Ventura, Calif., didn’t need any more than one scholarship offer. That came from Arizona back in June, and he committed to the Wildcats on Monday.

Dixon (6-3, 250) might be more noted for his track career so far — excelling in the 400 meters — and he said he considers himself a bit of an under-the-radar football prospect, considering he didn’t play much as a junior because of a shoulder injury.

He must have looked good at a UA camp for linemen in June, when the coaches offered a scholarship. Dixon said coaches told him they like his speed off the edge, although he figures to play inside in high school.

“I’m starting at DT right now,” he said. “When I was in camp this spring, the coaches said they liked my technique at end and my speed.”

Dixon is not currently rated by Rivals.com, Scout.com or 247sports.com, but that could change during his senior season, when analysts get a longer look at him.

He is from the same high school as former UA offensive lineman Vaughn Dotsy, who had to give up football last season because of back problems. Dixon — recruited by first-year defensive line coach Joe Salave’a — said Dotsy talked to him about some of the changes around the program in terms of facilities.

“He said it’s all good,” Dixon said.

Dixon is Arizona’s 11th known commitment.
