News conference set to announce Arizona baseball’s lease of Hi Corbett

The University of Arizona baseball team will be on the move.

The athletic department announced Tuesday evening that it will hold a press conference Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. “to discuss the City of Tucson approving a Letter of Intent proposed by the University and the City to lease Hi Corbett Field for use by the Arizona baseball team.”

Tucson mayor Bob Walkup is expected to attend.

Moving to Hi Corbett gives Arizona a professional-level facility, increasing the chances of hosting postseason play. Moving off-campus would also allow sales of beer at the games.

Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium has been the home of the baseball team since 1967, so there are plenty of memories there as the Wildcats won national titles in 1976, 1980 and 1986.

The move to Hi Corbett would give athletic director Greg Byrne intriguing options as to what to do with the real estate on which Sancet sits, adjacent to Arizona Stadium and McKale Center.

More details to come tomorrow.
