The college football signing period starts Wednesday, and the Arizona Wildcats still have some spots to fill.
Coach Rich Rodriguez said a few weeks ago that he wouldn’t necessarily give out all 25 scholarships on Signing Day, and he’s certainly saving one for star athlete Davonte’ Neal from Scottsdale Chaparral High School.
He headlines the list of “who’s left” for the Cats.
Here is a look at five recruits who could still pick the Wildcats:
1. Neal
He’s a two-time state of Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year as a receiver/defensive back who likely would be deployed as a threat all over coach Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense, which is built for speed. Neal, who might take an official or unofficial visit to Arizona after Signing Day, would be the centerpiece in RichRod’s first recruiting class if he signed.
Competition: Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Arkansas, North Carolina.
2. Bam Bradley, DB, Trotwood, Ohio
The major recruiting services rate Bradley as a three-star recruit, but he seems to be a “high” three-star recruit, considering his list of pursuers. Bradley will pick between Ohio State, Stanford, Pitt and Arizona, which made a late push and got Bradley on campus last week.
3. Dylan Cozens, DE, Scottsdale Chaparral High
He is 6-5, 235 with loads of upside after playing only one season of organized football. His relationship with his former high school coach, Charlie Ragle, who is now on Arizona’s staff as assistant director of football operations, is a plus for the Wildcats. Cozens will announce his decision Wednesday on a webcast at FoxSportsArizona.com, beginning at 10 a.m.
Competition: Washington, Boise State.
4. Bryan Harper, ATH, Ontario, Calif.
If he wants to play quarterback, Arizona would seem to offer the best opportunity among his two other finalists — UCLA and Oregon. Harper (6-0, 185) is a two-way standout who could compete as a backup quarterback in 2012 and stake a claim as being a starter in 2013. UCLA is more stacked at the position, with redshirt freshman Brett Hundley and 2012 commitment Devin Fuller, a player the Cats really coveted. Oregon’s presumptive starter next season is a sophomore, Bryan Bennett.
5. Jaxon Hood, DT, Chandler Hamilton High
The tree-star recruit is also among those who will announce his college choice on FoxSportsArizona.com on Wednesday morning. Arizona is in the hunt, but he seems to be leading toward Arizona State after originally giving a “soft verbal” to Boston College.
Arizona, as of late Tuesday morning, had between 18 to 20 publicly committed players, including linebacker C.J. Dozier, who enrolled at the semester break.
There were reports that Arizona has received commitments from DB Jamar Allah from Phoenix North Canyon High School and RB J.T. Washington from Satellite Beach, Fla., although each seems to be waiting until Signing Day to make an official announcement.
Allah has been committed to Arizona State. Washington had given a commitment to West Virginia.
Defensive tackle Gerron Borne might be wavering in his Arizona commitment, according to internet reports.
