High school quarterback de-commits from Arizona

Brandon Cox, a three-star quarterback recruit from Pasadena, Calif., is no longer committed to the Arizona Wildcats.

He confirmed that news in a text message to WildcatSportsReport.com, one of our sports partners at TucsonCitizen.com.

Cox committed over the summer but took a visit to Utah last weekend. He told WildcatSportsReport.com and other recruiting services on Monday he was still committed to Arizona, but he later decided to re-open his recruitment after further discussions with his family and UA coaches.

He told WildcatSportsReport.com he is still considering the Wildcats, but it seems likely the coaching staff will move on. The staff has been in contact with other quarterback possibilities.

Arizona has two other quarterbacks in its 2013 recruiting class — Anu Solomon of Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas and Tommy Woodson from Gateway High in Monroeville, Pa. Solomon is considered one of the centerpieces of the recruiting class, rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com

It will be an all-out battle for the Arizona quarterback position in the spring and fall after the departure of senior Matt Scott.

Junior B.J. Denker is the backup right now. Freshmen Javelle Allen and Josh Kern are redshirting, as is Louisiana Tech transfer Nick Isham, who will be a sophomore. Junior receiver Richard Morrison also has practiced at the position.

And then there will be the new recruits — Solomon, Woodson … and probably a quarterback to be determined.
