Arizona Wildcats tight ends coach Spencer Leftwich has accepted a position at UTEP, according to a report from FootballScoop.com.
Leftwich’s son, Mack Leftwich, recently committed to play quarterback for new Miners coach Sean Kugler. Mack was chosen the state’s Class AAAA Player of the Year in a media vote, although his 5-10 stature keep him from major scholarship offers.
Kugler’s son, Patrick, was a teammate of Mack’s at North Allegheny High in Pennsylvania. Spencer Leftwich coached at Pittsburgh last season — along with current UA assistants Calvin Magee, Tony Dews and Tony Gibson — before joining Rich Rodriguez at Arizona last winter.
Leftwich also has plenty of experience coaching in Texas, having served two stints as offensive line coach at North Texas (1994-2002; 2007-09) and coaching the line at Stephen F. Austin (1989-91). He also spent 1992-93 coaching at UTEP’s border rival, New Mexico State.
Sean Kugler has been the offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
