Former ASU recruit switches to Arizona, will enroll early

New Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez just completed his first big recruiting weekend with the Wildcats, landing a linebacker once committed to Arizona State and firming up players who committed to the previous staff.

Rodriguez was able to put his first incoming freshman into the win column when linebacker C.J. Dozier committed on his visit, according to various sources. He was expected to enroll Monday for the spring semester, according to reports from Scout.com and 247sports.com.

The spring presence of Dozier, from Chaparral High in Temecula, Calif., is a another boost to a group of linebackers that got much-needed experience when Akron’s Brian Wagner joined the team last week as a graduate student. The overall numbers at linebacker are still low, and a semester’s head start will help Dozier be ready if called upon as a freshman.

Dozier (6-1, 200) committed to Arizona State last summer but opened his recruitment when the Sun Devils changed coaches. Rivals.com and Scout.com rate him as a three-star recruit.

Arizona was able to apply Wagner’s scholarship toward last year’s limit of 25 scholarships. Rodriguez said last week that UA has the full 25 to give for the class of 2012.

“I don’t know if we’ll give them all out,” Rodriguez said. “It’s important to sign the right guys and not just sign guys. But we have needs at every position, so we’ll have a big class.”
