Arizona Wildcats running back Ka’Deem Carey became the 11th consensus All-American football player in school history Tuesday.
The Associated Press selected Carey a first-team All-American, giving the sophomore three of the four major awards announced so far. The Football Writers Association of America will announce its team Friday.
Carey, who leads the nation in rushing with 146.4 yards per game, is the first consensus All-American at Arizona since cornerback Antoine Cason in 2007.
“That would definitely mean a lot,” Carey said Sunday when asked what being a consensus All-America would mean to him. “God has blessed me.”
Eight of the previous 10 Arizona consensus All-Americans were defensive players, plus placekicker Steve McLaughlin. The other was receiver Dennis Northcutt, selected as an all-purpose player in 1999.
Carey can’t be a unanimous selection because he was not included on the American Football Coaches Association All-America team. The other officially recognized All-America teams are from The Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

First-year Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez coached three other consensus All-Americans while at West Virginia: Linebacker Grant Wiley (2003), running back Steve Slaton (2006) and center Dan Mozes (2006).
